ace combat assault horizon have some helicopter missions
I'm actually not looking for a helicopter sim...I want one of those arcade top down helicopter games that were popular in the late '90s.

Thunder Wolves is too over the top for my taste and there's a severe lack of those games on steam. The only other game that I know has helicopters is Renegade Ops but they don't handle very well.

I would agree with this, it looks good and they have a nice range of control types from more simplified to more sim. It's fairly easy to pick up and get playing in a few minutes, no manuals to read.

Have you gone back and played the strike series? I'm assuming that's what you are referring to although the view was more isometric. They still hold up today and are not that hard to get hold of.

I would love to see a new strike series. Fair Strike looks like thats what they were going for, the reviews aren't so good but I might give it a go.

I've already tried Fair Strike, it's a sim much like Commanche. I ended up refunding it as that's not what I'm looking for.

Yeah, spot on, that's what I'm looking for but with modern graphics. Why won't anyone make these anymore?

I've been toying around with the idea.

There are some other Strike like games in development, but they're either the kind that are exactly like the old games without any sort of modern twist, or they don't take themselves very seriously and neither are a balance I really care for.

Glad to know there are other people like me craving for this type of game.

I recommend to play ravenfield, if you want to play arcade helicopter action. Ravenfield currently has a helicopter that looks like tiger and it plays great. the control is super easy and simple but you can encounter various enemies from infantry to planes and it requires various strategies to play helicopter well without dying. it's very fun to find strategies for each maps and win the game. For me other parts of ravenfield is just boring, but helicopter play is an alternative dimension.
My whole 200 hours of playtime was spent on playing helicopter.

Here take a look at some videos that i recorded.
