But since you are so involved why dont you make some beautiful maps for free and upload to the web so other people like you can play them.
Wouldn't it be great if you could play this game with your friends?
So you think your 7 bucks are enough to develop a multiplayer for 30 years old game where a programmer would need at least a few hundred working hours to just look at the source code and come up with a viable solution for adding multiplayer? And that is just the planning and not the real coding of the thing with testing the game and then do at least some kind of marketing?
I guess you think they sell tenthousands of units every year so this is somehow viable?
Of course they would do this before they make a version which doesnt need dosbox anymore?
And did you not know someone already tried to make a remake based on the Civilization 4 engine and that sucked badly?
Yeah exactly and they put in a team of developers and already had a working game engine, and graphics. They only had to change the city screen and make some new units and animations, some new graphics and they couldnt do it. Because the remake is abysmal. And the revenues for the game were abysmal too.
All non-profit remakes are worked on for at least 5 to 10 years and dont go anywhere near the feeling and fun of the original game. They cant even get the travel time from Europe to the New World right or how often and how the king increases taxes and so on.
This game is a fringe group game for some people who enjoy the genre but no one in his right mind would put money into it.
That is at best a rumor because there is no official statement I know of that confirm it.
So where did you get that information? Do you have a official statement or link from Firaxis about this?
You're right, it's just a rumor. Though a rumor from Brian Reynolds, one of the game's creators. One guy on civfanatics forum had contacted him in 2008 (15 years ago!) about Col's files formats, and got the answer: "The original studio/office was closed several years ago too, so I'm not sure if the source material even exists any more, alas." (see this this thread[forums.civfanatics.com]). It's not a proof obviously, but it's plausible enough.
There is an independent version of the game called FeeCol - might want to check that out.
- Original did have a multiplayer. You could play all 4 in hot-seat mode.
- You could alter the map in game.
- You had the ability to force sell buildings like "Stockades".
- You literally make towns disappear.
- You could spam cannons.
You can find these functions in Cheats menu. It's hidden by default. To unlock it press and hold ALT, then press W, I, and N.
If you don't mind mods there are some great ones for the Civ 4 version of Col, such as TAC and We the People.
I remember this, -- on the faction selection screen entering the code used to allow you to select all four (before starting the game) -- this was patched out.
It still works if you change the language, I think, as that version is older.
