Which nation to play with?

Hi,

I had this game several years ago and this is one of the most immersive strategy games I've ever played. It cost me to understand how to play it effectively but today I understand everything needed to be efficient and make money to build an empire in America. However, which faction/nation would you consider to be good to play with?

I like the Dutch for many reasons. Big boost at the start with a ship that carries more and goes farther, plus all through the game prices for finished goods are much better to the Dutch than anyone else. As long as you have no objection to reloading a few times to get the FFs you want, (eg Cortes/Pocahontas/Brewster) you can keep up with any bonus the others have with regard to plunder, locals, and recruits.

The last time I played this game was 2 or 3 years ago. I completely understood the mechanics and how to build an empire but still I relied on resources. I just want to pick a map and play the best I can, avoiding restarting the game for a better map. Have you ever been able to play even if not with the best results with a "mediocre" map?

yes, it's possible to win on most maps (depending on difficulty level, haha), and i have fun every once in a while restarting looking for a really bad one and survive on it.

I always play Dutch (Conquistador der Monehbagges at your service) and although they suck at fighting and immigration, there is mad money to be made once you get a Custom House set up and then Adam Smith onboard (factories).

I like to set the Custom map to Continents with Large Land Masses of Temperate Climate which makes the most variety of raw materials available in the smallest area.

I want to play all nations to try the different ways to win. But Netherlands have some advantages. You have after a certain time enough money to buy everything. I guess it is possible to gain victory on every map. I am playing Viceroy difficulty.
