I cannot for the life of me fiure out how to plow the land. or set up trade routes properly

well plowing land requires at least 20 tools to be equipped to a citizen as a pioneer. each action the pioneer takes (clearing a forest, plowing or building a road) takes 20 tools.
you can recuit someone in europe and equip them with tools to save a slot in your ship too (citizen with tools still takes 1 slot, or the tools would take one slot)

trade routes get more complicated, but along the top bar is the trade menu, first you gotta make a route, pick a starting city then decied if you want it to be a land route (wagon) or sea, then you can add more cities and choose what goods you load or unload. unloading the goods in europe sells them, or you can have them be dropped off somewhere you have a customs house.

if it is a sea route, then select a ship and under orders is begin trade route (think T is the shortcut), or pick a wagon. anytime a ship or wagon enters a city it loses all its movement, so making roads around a city can help your wagons go a little farther

sadly outside of those two options, you can't set up trade routes with natives or other european factions.

btw keep an eye on your wagons. In every version ive ever played wagons occasionally glitch out and never unload

That happens because two wagons meet and then swap their carried goods for some reason.

Then the wagon has a trade good he isn't setup to unload anywhere and has no space to load more cargo. Therefore it just moves between the two cities unable to do anything.

I've seen that glitch, mainly in ships, but this is seperate. I've had for example a pure ore route between two colonies with no crossover and it still happens. Maybe it happens when two wagons are in the city at the same time?

It's happened to me too with the ships mainly crossing paths but occassionally it also happens with the wagons. That's why roads around your colonies are a good practice, they can also help you to navigate around other wagons.

With the ships I don't use automatic control when I have other ships in the area. I manually guide the ships around each other to avoid them crossing paths, if I can. Sometimes you can't avoid crossing paths in the straits.

However if the cargo holds are full on both ships or wagons the cargo will not transfer and it is okay if they cross paths.
