Editing save file

This might sound like a strange question but is there a way to edit save files? like allowing to select more gear or being able to train more skills at the start of the game? I know that cheating is kinda pointless in this game but I'm interested.

I know its possible as I saw a lets player back in the day do this. they were able to make a much more interesting custom difficulty by giving themself more skill points and then putting the difficulty higher than they were used to. I don't know how it is done though

I have been trying a lot but there seems to be no way to edit the files with modern tools like cheat engine, the knowledge for this appear to have been lost to the time unfortunately.
