Tilt Brush won't start
I just get it loading for about a minute or so, then it opens the steam interface in vr and thats it. Never will load.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled already.. also I am only using windows defender. Any ideas?!

Are you getting any user facing errors when Tilt Brush doesn't start? We have been getting reports of Tilt Brush not starting due to antivirus software.

If possible, please provide output logs (C:\Users\username\AppData\LocalLow\Google\Tilt Brush\output_log.txt) so we can try and debug this issue.

In the meantime, try installing the previous version and see if that's still an issue (right click Tilt Brush -> Properties -> Betas -> Previous Release). Thanks!

Hi. No errors were given, it just does the loading box for a min or two then closes and opens the steam interface window in vr.

I checked the folder you mentioned and had no such file in it, this seems to be because it never actually got far enough to make the file. I have installed the previous version as you suggested and it started right up and I now have that file.

I am going to post the file contents here but it may not matter in this case as the previous version seems to work. Maybe there is an issue with the latest update??

What can we do from here to ensure that I can update to the latest version at some point and have it work? Thanks.

Also I forgot to mention I am using windows defender at a minimum level, not sure if that could effect it.

This sounds like Windows Firewall (at the very least) is blocking Tilt Brush, even when you run the "previous" build. Can you check the settings for Tilt Brush and fix them if necessary?

See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2620334/windows-firewall-settings-are-greyed-out for instructions.

I'm sorry but you did a bad work here, this update doesn't work perfectly, I needed to reinstall the previous version. It's so frustraiting because I use the app to work, not only for fun, and the new update doesn't start on my computer, I loose a entire week of work just for that.

Considering that the newest version wont run at all and the older one does, regardless of the firewall message you posted.. this cannot be the problem. Again, there is obviously a diff between the new one and the old one keeping it from running.
Paul Du Bois  [developer] Nov 30, 2018 @ 2:33pm
@Bluelight, can you still examine firewall and report back its effects on Tilt Brush 17 and 18? Two things point to an interaction between the new version of Tilt Brush and the environment it runs in:

- The problem is deterministic, but limited to certain users/computers
- The problem manifests before Unity starts up and generates logs

I know it's a pain to run experiments, but lacking an environment where we can reproduce the issue, your help is important and useful, even if you report a negative result.

@Psyco3ler, can you send us the log file which is produced when you run the most recent release (if one is produced), and the log file which is produced when you run the previous release?

Every piece of info helps us and our partners get to the bottom of this; thanks all.

Edit: Also, if you're willing to discuss directly and try out diagnostic builds, send an email to tiltbrush@google.com referencing this thread and I'll contact you via email.

I'm having an identical problem. I've disabled Windows Firewall completely and Tilt Brush shows the same "failure to start, no log or crash dump" behavior.

I'll try downloading Tilt Brush 17 and see if that helps.

And just as Bluelight experienced, after installing previous version, Tilt Brush starts immediately. I believe we can conclude this issue is not firewall related.

When you say tilt brush 17 and 18.. is 18 the latest version and 17 is the previous one that I told you works?

If so, 17 works with the firewall exactly how it has always been on my PC. That is the one that you have my log for. The latest version DID NOT generate a log because it never got far enough to do so.

Verify these versions and I will report back on the latest version with the firewall disabled just for SNG.
Paul Du Bois  [developer] Dec 4, 2018 @ 5:22pm
Thanks for the updates, everyone. On our end, we're working with a community member who is helping us narrow down the problem further.

For those experiencing the problem, could you take a look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\logs, at the files vrserver.txt and vrclient_tiltbrush.txt and see if there's any unusual output when Tilt Brush 18 fails to start up?

In vrserver.txt, the Tilt Brush-related output will be near the text "327140" (eg "prelaunch check for steam.app.327140").
Irk26 Dec 5, 2018 @ 7:32pm

Having the same problem here !
I even tried a fresh SSD with a new install and Tilt Brush won't start.
Firewall and Defender disabled.

vrserver.txt doens't even mention 327140
vrclient_tiltbrush.txt doesn't exist
C:\Users\username\AppData\LocalLow\Google\Tilt Brush\output_log.txt doesn't exist

Is there another way to install V17 since my history/previous versions is gone ?
Paul Du Bois  [developer] Dec 7, 2018 @ 5:29pm
Hi, jan and Irk26. To go back to V17, right-click Tilt Brush in your Steam library -> Properties -> Betas. Select "previous release".

An update on our end: we've narrowed down the issue and are talking to our partners. Could the people who are experiencing this problem let us know what kind of headset they're using?
