I'm sure there's better strategy to leveling up crafting out there but this is what I do:
In the beginning I level up Tailoring & Leatherworking by turning bundle of flax into threads and then into flax canvas. I farm a lot of flax early on so there's synergy there. After that I use the canvas to make light armor for myself. I keep +5 and +6 but either sell or dismantle the rest for more xp.
For Weaponsmithing I crafted bows. I only keep few of them and dismantle the rest. For Armorsmithing I crafted shield. Same as bow, only keep some, dismantle the rest for more xp. Why bows and shield? They require very little resource to craft. Just make sure to craft the highest level bows and shield you can. The ones that give more than 100 xp per item. Use +4 crafting bench if you can.
Eventually I started doing quest so I got a lot of mobdrops; weapons and armors of different kinds. I sell expensive ones on market, keep very few of them and dismantle the rest. My second non-crafting character leveled up Weaponsmithing all the way to level 50+ just by dismantling weapons.
I happen to get a lot of steel bars from killing npcs and looting chests so I never needed to craft them. Sometimes it's better to just buy the materials in bulk from market. Find something that you can easily sell on market and use that money to buy other materials. For me, herbs are very easy to gather. They're everywhere. Easy 20-30s per 1k just from harvesting them as you go.
I did happen to find a nice place to farm Pyrite about an hour ago, going well so far, but probably not after daytime comes and more enemy players are active.
The basics are that front line castles have all the good mines and good farms as an attractant to make you fodder for PVP though.
The dig pit is a great source of materials and shoddy armor and weapons to destroy, that will give you scraps you can smelt down into Iron / Steel.
Castle Audenstede is open to the nation.
It is on the front lines and we do get attacked daily but it's as safe as somewhere less productive such as Ulfguard Mine.
I'm going to try working on my other Crafts, but I'm not expecting much better out of them.
It's cost effective, but very time consuming and slow. And I don't really get to leave a farmland, so not exactly exciting gameplay.
