I am just playing it right now but it has been quite a long time since my last game.
Biggest issue with multiplayer is that there are players creating online rooms and then going AFK for unknown reason.

It's not dead per se but you will deal with a LOT of afk hosts and sometimes it's slow to find people to join your game.

Far from dead, this is the 2nd most active worms title.

If you go to SteamDB you can look at how many people are playing each game via Steam. Good for cheacking the life of games. Any thing over 300 is often good for smaller titles.

A game that is, let's see here...

*tick* - available to buy. As in; has a store page, is 'taking orders' so to speak.
*tick* - works on modern and >gosh< even older pre-2016 operating systems
*tick* - is a Worms game so supports hot seat multiplayer where, you guessed it, you only need one controller and/or keyboard! You could even play over time like one does in chess, ie; have the game running on a computer/terminal that is put back to sleep after a player makes a move.
*tick* - has a still fully working online multiplayer system so you and your online buddies who also own the game can play as much as you want!

I'm really struggling to see a few things here, and I'm a genius so it's telling how peculiar this behavior is!
A) Why anyone would call a game that still works 'dead'. Seeing that this thread appears to have been started by an English-speaker it's as if they're unaware of the breadth of applicable words. There are some exceptions here for folk like me on the OLED Steam Deck: some games just don't run on here. From my library of 1010 games (had this account since Steam launched) only 3 games don't run on this machine. Then there are games that rely on the internet but have had their servers shut down. Those would be *dead* games.

B) It's a worms game. Who on gods green earth has a desire to play this online. Where's the fun in that? Loading up and facing off against someone with a strange way of talking, or who doesn't talk at all, whilst they probably use hacks or whathaveyou. I tried online Worms a few times, and online games in general. Don't see the appeal whatsoever.

Meanwhile... it's a Worms game. One of the best party games around (even if the games themselves are lacking now. Feels like Sonic; a classic series that just can't find its feet in this day and age. Whereas Mario, Zelda, Street Fighter all continue to be the best). What you're supposed to do is speak to your friends, maybe family too. You arrange a get together or just turn up/be turned up on. You play games till the cows come home, seeing how many drunk buddies you can fit into one of the spare rooms (because of course all the other spare rooms are being done up right now ;).

IS the game worth it? At this price yeah. It's... not amazing. Worms hasn't been for a while. The last time I felt the magic of it was the DS version as it being on a handheld console made impromptu multiplayer sesh's easy peasy. And whilst I have a Steam deck Valve haven't 'Nintendo-ified' the multiplayer aspect of the Deck and so it's clunky, isn't as easy as you'd hope to just make a network and have a multiplayer in it.

I wonder where this call for online multiplaying games is coming from, as I've never come across a person in real life, who plays games, who prefers to do so on the internet instead of in person. Even when those impromptu gaming sessions fire up at the in-laws random houses (so like 80% of people there I don't know that much at the start)... none of them play games online after that first test we all seem to do back in the early 2000's.

I'm guessing this "dead" talk is just this modern thing of wishing to be seen lying for no reason. playing a homogenus persona online (just look at how everyone wishes to be the same now, in contrast to the 90's, 2000's thing of individuality). I'd just get bored if I tried to be like everyone else xD
So many 'wtf' things to comment on here, but the only thing I'll respond to is regarding online multiplayer.

For Worms titles, online multiplayer is where it's at. The solo stuff is really only to get you trained up enough to compete against actual human beings. As much as IRL hotseat sounds fun, it's just not a reality for many people for various reasons. Besides, it's better to play with people online because odds are, those people are far better than your buddies, so you're going to learn more about the game and get better at it.

Also, it's worth posing the question whether the game is dead or not because this game has been out for 8 years, which is kinda old. The game definitely does not have as much activity as it used to, and it seems to be continually dropping.

Also, good on you for having an OLED Steam deck even though nobody asked you and your inclusion of that fact had nothing to do with the subject lol

I'm amused that you claim to be a genius, then in the rant that follows prove that to not be the case.

Best way to play would be getting a bunch of friends on discord to buy this game then play it with them tbh.

I'm not sure why people keep on saying the game is dead online. There are around ten games looking for players at a time online - since the game only needs two players you should be able to find a match if you go into the game listing mode.

Below is picture proof of the average amount of games to expect on the game finder in Worms W.M.D.

It's not ALWAYS like that though, and I am willing to bet that at least 1/3rd of the hosted games are AFK hosts. It is not at all uncommon to see that literally every hosted game is some AFK idiot. WMD isn't 'dead' per se but it's definitely declining in activity and has been for a while.
