most popular are Worms Armageddon and Worms World Party (but graphics is somewhat outdated already)
most classic (only bare mechanics) are Worms Reinforcements (Worms Director's Cut on some platforms) (extremely old graphics, DOS era style)
Worms Revolution and Worms 3D are outliers - unique 3d graphics not seen in any other Worms game
I decided to buy Worms Reloaded and Worms WMD. Because as I see the most classic games are outdated in graphics, I think some new mechanics are not too bad, if the core is classic.
Worms WMD I can't enjoy it. The Vehicle mechanic completely ruins the good old game's strategy for me. For what strategy and good aim, if you can fly with a "car" and instantly kill your enemy. And there isn't just 1 vehicle, there are many anoying vehicles across the map. And worms reloaded feels empty IMO, i can't replay it ever.
Outside of Worms Armageddon 2, my favorites are Worms Revolution and Ultimate Mayhen 4.They are different experiences, since in one you have mechanics like fluid physics and the other is 3D. But they are a lot of fun. UM4 is outaded but Revolutin feels very modern. Definitively reccomend getting Worms Revolution if you enjoy worms.
But my advice is: Don't trust nostalgic people as references for games. Nostalgia by definition is not a good feeling. And usually these people are just stuck in a happy past that never comes back. And trying to relive it through a game they played at the time.
