Strategy using the Unwanted Present?
I don't get it, it just seems like a less flexible dynamite, that gives the enemy a chance to get away. What's the deal?

The more turns it is active, the more damage it does. It's great for 4-6 player battles, but in a 1 vs 1 match its not too helpful.

Maybe to blow open pathways just when you need them so that you can get to an enemy worm before they can get to you?

Yeah, in 1v1 it's pretty much useless unless you want to force the person to use their switch, or to craft another one. But they could have picked one up in a crate as well. Way too risky. With 3 players it's already usable if you set it on 1 turn.

On 1 vs 1 it is tricky. . B/c it's hard to remember which worm will move next, and there is that worm select utility. .
My tip is to try placing it over the last worm which took turn. You could take further risk and set the fuze for two turns if you'd like.
It can be used to block an area from being a place to retreat to as well.

Other than that, it can easily deal a lot of damage to a worm in 1v1 if the enemy already used their worm select. Depending on the damage threshold it can be worth it. You and the enemy can still try to knock other worms onto the present, so be wary of that.

You can use it in situation when water is raising, and someone built a fortress on top made of bridges. Just place unwanted presented there with x turns and watch them escape somewhere else. :,)

Can't you just blast it away with a bat or let it fall through a hole?

If you're playing Forts, you can set the fuse to X turns and then baseball bat it over to them before it explodes.
