Mario games have lot of original ideas. Zelda games have lot of original ideas. Now i ask you: can Worms do something similar?
Just take all the ideas that worked, and throw away those that didn't. Personally I think all the things added with WMD are great. I like crafting, buildings, the vehicles and the weapon mounts.
Maybe classes could make a comeback? More balanced though.
And we're missing a lot of beloved weapons.
I didn't play Arma, I only played World Party, but those were very similar.
Vehicles were a bad idea. Crafting was a bad idea. Adding the drone (winner of the community contest) was a bad idea. Not including SO MANY classic weapons and utilities was a bad idea. Leaving out lots of customization and scheme options was a bad idea. Of course everyone's opinion is going to be different but I feel that crafting and vehicles change the core gameplay too much and steer it into a noob direction. There's plenty of other things that the series could incorporate.
I've written an essay's worth of material on what a new Worms title should look like. A big problem with WMD is that they made it too over the top and included way too many OP and/or redundant weapons so the entire balance of the game is about huge destructive capabilities and less about strategy and skill. In WMD all you have to do is just turn vehicles and crafting off and you can clearly see that the game becomes more competitive and less random / luck-based.
The dynamic water that was in Revolution / Clan Wars was the best gameplay addition to the series because it added so much tactical depth to the game. I also liked solid physics objects which could break and be moved around via various means.
The idea of worm classes was a good idea too, but unfortunately the classes were not very well balanced and TBH I think that the heavy class should have been nerfed a bit, especially as it pertains to the ninja rope. (For some reason they were the best when it comes to roping, which is dumb.)
Very few of the new craftable weapons in WMD are worth keeping around in the future.
Worm Select Advanced? Eh, okay.
Tunnel Kit? Strategically useful. Keep it.
Balloon? Sure, but make it more susceptible to wind and not so 'steerable.'
Sentry Gun Lite. I like this because it's throwable and has low HP.
Girder Girth. Sometimes you just need to go big.
Aside from that, all of the new craftables are redundant or stupidly OP.
There's lots of great items from all of the past games that would have been far better choices to include in the game, and it took ages for Team17 to patch the game so that we could set craftable items to be a part of default inventory. We still can't edit whether or not they will appear in crate drops. The whole crafting idea was bad from the start and I have said so from literally day 1, ESPECIALLY when it comes to keeping basic staples behind a craft wall. Why on earth should classic weapons like sheep launcher, kamikaze, and mine strike be craftable only? They've been in the game for decades.
I think that the coin crate system from Rev/CW was far superior to the crafting system because you knew exactly what someone got. 1 crate = 10 coins. Everyone could easily see exactly how much an item costs to purchase and also keep track of how many coins their opponent(s) have collected. In WMD there's no way of telling because the contents of crafting crates are random. Also, in Rev/CW you had to actually collect the crates yourself instead of being able to spam drones from all the way across a map and not have to give up your hiding spot.
WMD did a lot of things right - it brought back up to 6 teams with up to 8 worms apiece. It at least tries to emulate the WA ninja rope even if it's not nearly as good. It also has a global chat lobby which in theory should be great but they implemented it so hastily and sloppily that it's a barely functional mess people rarely use it. (Also, players who are merely running the game but not looking for MP show up in the player list, which is wildly misleading.)
I won't hold my breath for anything though. Ever since Worms Reloaded came out, Team17 has shown time and time again that they don't really care what long-time fans of the series want and instead will just poop out bad ideas and try to reinvent the wheel over and over again. My faith in Team17 to make an awesome new Worms game is extremely low but I will always have a little bit of hope.
