Worms Rumble was an awful mess and a blatant attempt at cashing in on the mindless battle royale craze. We all knew it was going to suck, and guess what? It sucks.
Judging by the timeline of past Worms releases I'd say that it's not likely that WMD is going to get a large update anytime soon. Or any sort of an update at all, really. I think it's far more likely that they will just make a new game entirely. This upcoming summer will be 6 years since WMD launched. Here's timeline of Worms release dates:
Worms (1995 video game) (1995)
Worms: The Director's Cut (1997)
Worms 2 (1997)
Worms Armageddon (1999)
Worms World Party (2001)
Worms 3D (2003)
Worms Forts: Under Siege (2004)
Worms 4: Mayhem (2005)
Worms Ultimate Mayhem (2011)
Worms (2007 video game) (2007)
Worms 2: Armageddon (2009)
Worms Reloaded (2010)
Worms: A Space Oddity (2008)
Worms Revolution (2012)
Worms Clan Wars (2013)
Worms Battlegrounds (2014)
Worms W.M.D (2016)
Worms Rumble (2020)
Not counting the 3D titles, the biggest gap between any Worms title was between Worms World Party and Worms 2: Armageddon, which was a span of 8 years. Since then they have been churning out Worms games every couple of years. I do remember reading something that a Team17 spokesperson said prior to WMD's launch. They said that this would be the last Worms title for a while... it is unclear if they meant 2D "classic" Worms title or just any Worms game in general.
I've BEEN READY for a new game for a long time. WMD has been a big disappointment and instead of investing resources in updating a 6 year old game they should be working on making a GOOD game. Get rid of the lame and stupid stuff like vehicles and crafting and tons of redundant weapons and instead focus on tactical gameplay. Keep what is good about the past titles and shed what is not... then add more.
I can think of dozens - if not a hundred or more - ideas that would bring Worms to the next level.
What disappointment you mean actually? What's wrong with it from your point? Vehicles and craft can be disabled in match. What weapons can be used in match can be setts too. Also, there is a Classic, Pro and ESL presets exists.
I think WMD is the best Worms since Armageddon.
But sure, vehicles in ranked matches is really awful decision.
-crafting is terrible (yes, I am aware that it can be disabled but that's not the point)
-vehicles are terrible
-many of the weapons in the game are OP, redundant, or so niche that they're kinda pointless
-the global chat lobby / game list is a bugged out mess
-no comprehensive map editor
-no cross play (a game as niche as Worms really can't suffer having a divided player base)
-a very limited and not very well-made ranking system that rewards grinding rather than actual skills
-not *nearly* enough scheme customization options
-hats/maps/etc all being tied to a clunky workshop system
-the lack of SO many important weapons and utilities from past games, items that would add so much more strategic depth to WMD than stupid crap like flaming donkeys and OMG LOL strikes
-the lack of several interesting and strategic gameplay elements from past games, such as worm classes, physics objects (especially *solid* girders), and my favorite of all, dynamic water
-the inclusion of the drone, which was a contest winner and Team17 added it to WMD. The game did not originally have the drone and it was better without it because drones are pure cheese
-a very barebones in-game text chat by modern standards
-not enough terrain themes... they added like 3 more after the game launched but it's still not enough. WMD really needs about twice as many as it has, or more. It gets boring seeing the same few terrains all the time.
-falling / fall damage is far too forgiving
-many minor changes to the game that aren't good, like how homing rockets are not affected by magnets anymore, or how you can manually activate a parachute while roping
-unresolved bugs
-issues with people's data getting deleted for no discernible reason
I don't think that WMD is a terrible game but I think that it could have been a hell of a lot better if they simply waited a bit longer to release it. It released buggy as hell, with way too little content, and let's not forget the whole "All-Stars pack" pre-order fiasco.
If this is really a thing, then I think they won't be doing any more classic turn based Worms games ever again. Sadly.
That first Worms Rumble teaser that shows the new Worm 3D model smashing the TV with olds worms on it always felt very suspicious to me.
Team17 was allowed? But ... by who. I thought that worms is their franchise fundamentally and they can do anything they want.
Even so, things in business doesn't work like that as simple as someone just feeling like to do something new and then gathering a team to make it happen ASAP lmao. Companies do have superiors, shareholders or publishers they have to please first for things to happen. No one wants to put money on something of uncertain profit or questionable quality. Why do you think there are projects that never left the paper, that are canceled or scrapped to turn into something completely different on early/mid development in the first place?
Even if said company is the very owner of an entire holding things are never going to be simple as that.
Unless they are indie developers they won't be getting enough freedom. But of course indie devs are also often limited by budget and team sizes.
I don't think that WMD will be the last Worms title, but they are notoriously stingy with information so it's likely the public will know nothing about a new Worms game until it's nearly ready for release.
they simply cant afford making any more games of the series
the best they can do is to publish the source code, at least the engine, and let the community develop the game further on
but, considering the engine is pretty simple and easily gets reproduced even by average grade developers[hedgewars.org], who needs that, anyway?
Nobody should count them as Worms titles. Ever. They are bullshizzle. They are not Worms games at all.
