We'd always be open to bringing our players together, where possible.
It's a question of tech, suitability and having enough resources.
It'd be ace if it gets easier as time goes by!
How about simply just releasing a game on just one platform? It is high time for a Worms game specifically made for computers with no thought of consoles in mind. Having all of the players undivided on one platform would be a HUGE draw, not to mention it would be optimized and have day-one features that consoles simply wouldn't have.
Having separate Steam and GOG versions was stupid, though.
Cross-play just seems like a nightmare to figure out from a logistics perspective. Each console has different hardware and specs and there would be numerous technical hurdles to overcome in order to make that actually work. On the other hand, they could simply just release the game on Steam only and dedicate their energy and time towards making sure that one release is spot on. I feel that cross-platform would be the suboptimal solution compared to making it a Steam exclusive but it would be better than having a divided player base for sure.
With cross-play we would have to cater to the lowest common denominator, so to speak. I wouldn't want to see a future game lacking features/content/options because it's basically the same build amongst all platforms. I know that Team17 wouldn't release ANY game as a Steam exclusive these days because they want to sell copies of the game on as many platforms as possible and make as much money as possible because they are a business after all and they ultimately don't give a crap about the player base so long as they are selling copies of the game. They don't care that the multiplayer dies out in these newer Worms titles in hardly any time.
It's so funny that W:A was released almost 20 years ago and still is (as far as I can tell) roughly just as active as WMD, or possibly even moreso. xD
Remember AceWorm? He played with a controller on PC and you couldn't tell if he was using a controller or a keyboard. I have WMD also on Xbox One and I was able to rope with the controller well enough for schemes like Pro. I just remapped the buttons and put the controller on the table and used it like a keyboard so I didn't need to learn to rope again. I noticed that I was a bit slower with my moves because I couldn't use F keys but it's not a big deal IMO. I know some experienced console players can select a weapon way faster than me. Keyboard and mouse support is coming to consoles at some point anyway. Even now you could buy an adapter and play with your keyboard.
