the gray wizard heals, has good magic and learns a revive (as does the bright wiz)
the berzerker is iffy he can hit your guys (you can keep them away from him) & loses turns sometimes, but can have a bow & gets alot of attacks.
i liked the witch hunter as hes very versital and will help if there are undead.
i didnt like althera the archmage as your spell list changes from only defensive to only offensive and would normaly just melee with them.
the 2 dwarves are ok and you can buy bombs for them
the prist is nice as he has defence and hit magic but some of the other melee people hit better
shadow guy has a vanish that you may need to complete a quest later on (1 character has to carry something and not get hit)
the bright wizards is a good mage and learns a revive but uless you want burn damage over healing i'ed just use the gray wiz though is good if you want a backup mage.
and finaly the wood elf seemed to miss alot for me but did fine when i got her some items that increased hit chance
1. Grey Wizard
2. Witch Hunter
3. Shadow Warrior
4. ??
Seems very fragile so far, if you had to pick your top four would you even have a dwarf/beserk/ogre?
the WH is meh as your ranger but i had alot of amulets and ammo that made him more usefull but i also had burning arrows for the SW.
with the dlc you'll have a nice axe for the trollslayer and he tends to crit, the other dwarf i went 1-handed with a shield.
get your melee guys increased hit items asap, also same for your ranger but i didn't get increased ranged hit till mid game and i found a hat for my gray wiz that gave him mp once per dungeon.
one more thing "use once" items are 1 use per dungeon.
My first party was: Ironbreaker, Witch hunter, Gray mage and Waywatcher. Enjoyed them a lot and din't really want to switch to another composition, but gave it a try and the second party is no worse than the first (maybe even a little better): Priest, Trollslayer, Archmage and Shadow warrior.
If you have the deluxe version, playing through the entire 3 regions with the same party might become boring, so you'll switch them sooner or later.
1. Marauder
2. Trollslayer
3. Grey Wizard
4. Bright Wizard
If the wizards both have healing and resurrect spells this party is practically invincible.
Sometimes I change out the Trollslayer for the priest or Ironbreaker. Or a wizard for the Waywatcher or Witch Hunter depending on the monsters. Alternatively I use the Ogre instead of the Ironbreaker, priest or Trollsalyer as a tank.
The first reply answers that question. No!

While not complete its quite comprehensive and if you spot an error let me know!
1) Iron Breaker (dwarf) as tank with 1h and shield
2) the waywatcher, she's doing amazing dps with 4 ranged attacks per turn
3) the grey wizard, I can't imagine playing without him for the healing, even though I would like to get rid of him, cuz he's quite boring... but hey heals
4) the bright wizard, I want to use him for extra dps but he's on trial, I'm leveling him up to get same lvl as the rest of the group, for now he's not that impressive as dps we'll see, if he doesn't work I'll get back the witch hunter.
Maurader - with the deluxe sword he just carves through them
Wood Elf - with a good bow he levelled very quickly for me, might just be luck or playstyle but I really struggled with the Shadow Elf.
Bright Wizard - only learnt that spells they learn are a bit random, he had "Sear Wounds" early on and has been a far more useful healer & more versatile damage than the Grey Wizard who is slow and sluggish.
Witch Hunter - he made early Undead levels stupidly easy and got to level 5 when the rest of my guys were 2 or 3.
Priest - I hated him at first, he was useless, but now with a giant warhammer he packs a punch and does odd random and sometimes useful support stuff.
Dwarves - I tend toward the Dragonslayer, and I found the Iron Breaker only worked for me when he had a big two handed weapon (same as Marauder - sword & shield just doesn't suffice in the damage stakes for my playstyle).
Archmage has been alright because he's got the sun lance spell which is probably the most damaging individual spell with all my wizards, and he can sometimes cast it a few times in 1 round which is pretty devestating - but otherwise he hasn't done much good.
Ogre - as said above, having just 1 attack makes him pretty useless and his swing ability just doesn't do much damage. I did just finish a quest for a decent club but without a 2nd attack he just misses constantly.
The warrior priest is the ultimate support character. With the blessing Intervention and a wee bit of luck your party can have multiple turns during a single round. It's massively OP. If you can get the Hammer of Sigmar and the top tier armour for the Priest he becomes pretty decent in combat, plenty of deathblows.
Grey Wizard (with spells: Twilight Translocation, Okkam's Mindrazors, Spectral Sanctuary, Nightmare Visage, Heartbeat, Blade of Night, Shield of Illusion) - best spells and good item support
Trollslayer - Whirlwind... enough said
Marauder - great item support and can end up with so many attacks it makes up for his Berserk every so often
Last spot goes to either:
Ironbreaker - can be a good performer with the Hammer of Sigmar
Shadow Warrior - good item support and skills, and being able to shoot then move is handy
Witchhunter - decent item support and quite good vs Undead (don't bother unless going into an Undead dungeon)
Having an archer can help out on those random spawns with casters lurking too far away.
The Grey Wizard seems mandatory for Hardcoremode (Q_Q I know) and the others mix some healing with damage burst, Wizard and Priest stacking extra attacks on a priest with Sigmar or Hunter with a MW Sabre and a +hit ring can smack down even big-ass opponents in a turn or two. Disclaimer: Not yet completed the game on Hardcore, so my opinion may change :P
The Marauder is a no brainer really. Its the ultimate trash mob cleaner.
