Japanese Language anyone?
Did a quick search and found nothing. Is it possible to revert the game back to japanese? This engurish is just annoying.

So, just get the original version somehow. I bought it on Amazon.jp for example. :P

Same here, it really sucks but I can't support this and most other ADV game releases on Steam due to this. I really want to be excited that these games are gaining worldwide acceptance through this platform, but on top of the butchered content the original text isn't even included, here and in other cases. Just really makes me sad...

I have horrible english myself so I don't catch most of those things, the one thing I did catch was they called people in 2nd year of highschool 2nd graders, but the restro patch fixes that. The only game I've played where I felt like the english was ♥♥♥♥ was the Air beta patch (1st half).... they fixed it back up though. I don't feel like I am really missing anything it this game yet.... well I think there might be a underwear/topless sprite that the restro sprite didn't add? pure specualtion though.

Thanks, ill get it next^^

Nekopara is what all the releases on here need to look like (save the 18+ scene removal of course). If other makers would release directly on steam like that, we'd avoid any kind of missing content from licensing issues, and they'd take all the profits themselves, instead of giving them to the localiser. Everybody wins.
PabloC Jul 2, 2015 @ 3:10pm
^ Except that Nekopara was released on Steam by the localizing company (Sekai Project), while IMHHW was released directly by the Japanese developer (MoeNovel is a part of Pulltop) without any licensing issues to speak of.

Also, giving no profits to the localizer = no translation. :P
gomae Jul 2, 2015 @ 9:02pm
↑ Oh hey, didn't realise that about MoeNovel. But if the steam release was an inside project it makes it even more confusing this wasn't published with the original text track (the possible licensing issues I meant were with the text). And why was it okay with Neko Works to put both languages on here?

I was suggesting it be done like it seems Pulltop is doing it, publishing directly from the parent company with no localisation publisher, thus eliminating an unnecessary step and any licensing barriers.
PabloC Jul 3, 2015 @ 4:18am
^ I think technical issues are far more important than licensing problems. Displaying JP text normally requires setting OS to Japanese locale, so you'd need some workarounds to make it work (like installing extra fonts or something). And switching between both versions would require additional tweaks with the entire engine - normally, VNs simply don't support such features.

Nekopara and that Go Go Japan thingy are very rare exceptions, that were made with multiple languages in mind from the very beginning. But that's just some short catgirl porn and random trivia about Japan. Bigger, more serious VNs are usually made solely for the JP market.

As for localisation companies - I disagree. JP developers tend to have a rather poor knowledge about the Western market, and absolutely no idea how English language works, so I'd say it's better to have a Western publisher. Otherwise we can end up with stuff like IMHHW - that is, a horribly mistranslated and ridiculously censored fanfic, very loosely based on original VN. :P
Besides, many JP developers simply aren't interested in a Western market at all, so they won't go out of their way to release anything here.
gomae Jul 3, 2015 @ 12:20pm
↑ Ah, was this translation that bad, comparatively? It is probably true that a local company would try harder to preserve the game content in a localisation, now that you point it out. I was just hoping that with the globalisation of galge coming from this new boom of Steam releases, there would be a way to bring the full original versions on here too, for the Japanese audience and people like myself who can read them. That would make it so much easier to get these games for both sides, without having to pay the usual ridiculous prices (plus import fees in foreigner's cases).

I think the Higurashi release is one where everything was done perfectly, no? Provided the 'objectionable' scene in a later chapter I heard about doesn't get censored.

Steam is suitable only for all-ages titles. Other than that, it's a very bad platform for distributing VNs, because it means censorship.

As for ridiculous prices of JP titles are a big obstacle when it comes to releasing VNs on the West. Developers don't want to sell their work for ~25% of the original price, because there's a risk their JP customers would start importing cheaper versions, and Western market isn't big enough to compensate for that. That's also an important reason not to include an option for a JP language.

I'm not familiar with Steam Higurashi, but this VN was translated and released a long time ago. With improved TL and new artwork, I'm pretty sure it's solid release indeed.
But, that's a ~10 years old, amateur title. Releasing something like that with two languages is incomparably easier than in case of newer VNs made by bigger companies.

Yeah, I guess small-scale or doujin game makers don't have revenue interests to protect like the big players, so they have no real problem releasing the full contents on steam. I hope if the West does grow into a sizeable market from this boom we're seeing on Steam, that we might see the big developers just globalise everything and stop trying to lock Japanese customers to the local release by removing JP scripts.

It'd also be great if they could release older games in full here, as they're not going to be selling many copies anymore.
