Same here, it really sucks but I can't support this and most other ADV game releases on Steam due to this. I really want to be excited that these games are gaining worldwide acceptance through this platform, but on top of the butchered content the original text isn't even included, here and in other cases. Just really makes me sad...
Thanks, ill get it next^^
Also, giving no profits to the localizer = no translation. :P
I was suggesting it be done like it seems Pulltop is doing it, publishing directly from the parent company with no localisation publisher, thus eliminating an unnecessary step and any licensing barriers.
Nekopara and that Go Go Japan thingy are very rare exceptions, that were made with multiple languages in mind from the very beginning. But that's just some short catgirl porn and random trivia about Japan. Bigger, more serious VNs are usually made solely for the JP market.
As for localisation companies - I disagree. JP developers tend to have a rather poor knowledge about the Western market, and absolutely no idea how English language works, so I'd say it's better to have a Western publisher. Otherwise we can end up with stuff like IMHHW - that is, a horribly mistranslated and ridiculously censored fanfic, very loosely based on original VN. :P
Besides, many JP developers simply aren't interested in a Western market at all, so they won't go out of their way to release anything here.
I think the Higurashi release is one where everything was done perfectly, no? Provided the 'objectionable' scene in a later chapter I heard about doesn't get censored.
As for ridiculous prices of JP titles are a big obstacle when it comes to releasing VNs on the West. Developers don't want to sell their work for ~25% of the original price, because there's a risk their JP customers would start importing cheaper versions, and Western market isn't big enough to compensate for that. That's also an important reason not to include an option for a JP language.
I'm not familiar with Steam Higurashi, but this VN was translated and released a long time ago. With improved TL and new artwork, I'm pretty sure it's solid release indeed.
But, that's a ~10 years old, amateur title. Releasing something like that with two languages is incomparably easier than in case of newer VNs made by bigger companies.
It'd also be great if they could release older games in full here, as they're not going to be selling many copies anymore.
many of japanese novel have ♥♥♥♥♥♥ translation, so i rarely bought english translation for novel.. printed novel such as book girl (bungako shoujo) is really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ one.. and for the visual novel, i said nekopara is bad, but not the worst...
