Melee for sure. Dont let all the others tell you that it is magic. They use melee themselves, for a reason.

2-handed sword + magic tree skills.
I can solo the Troll guarding the bridge leading to hilt fortress in nightshade pass.
Helps to also have the immortality fruit from the founders pledge, can be done with health potions. Would also be a good idea to either grind for gold to buy a set of armor or grind to craft your own.
Gonna test out dual wielding today.

This for PvE only:
My Paladin build
Heavy armor : Crafted Meteoric Epic Plate with copper metal bindings and supple leather straps
Get the exceptionaly crafted for the extra durability, enchant strength and crit% if you can.
Earth magic : Stone Fist, Obsidian Arrow~ lvl 80 ( both passives for strength and defence )
Symphany of Stone and Bulwark of Earth ~ Lvl 80
Blades ~ 80Lvl tier 1
Whirlwind and Coupe de Grace ~ 80lvl, others ~60Lvl is enough for combos, use Coupe when enemy at 20% health ( ive had 400+hp damage hits )
Blade Passives ~ 60-80 Lvl all 3
Tactics : Reckless stance (dps stance ) 60-80lvl, Armor and weapon preservation ~60-80lvl
Defensive stance ~ 60-80lvl ( tanking stance )
2 handed copper sword 2x Emerald gems slotted ( Earth Magic attunement )
Ignite weapon ~ 40 lvl is enough , Highly flammable passive 40-60lvl
Heavy armor sets :Inner strength/Deflection 40-60Lvl
Heal tree ( dont get rez, its pointless ) others are good + both passives
Soothing rain HoT ( water magic tree )
Healing Grace HoT

Tactics :
Strength + passives ( around +27 strength )
Ignite weapon
Pull with Obsidian arrows
Pop both Hots ~ *Soothing rain, Healing Grace
Pop Reckless stance for speed buff
Stone fists/Obsidian arrow spam a lama
Combos ( all the blade skills are awesome ) ~ use them all.
Coupe de Grace finisher

* Zoom camera angle right out if using soothing rain during combat.
* Obsidian arrow and Stone fist are your bread and butter
* Learn to make a great dynamic deck so you can spam Obsidian arrow and stone fists
*2 handed sword hits 3 targets at once, so line em up real perdy
*2 handed sword reach is great, even if you webbed will still smash spiders to pieces

Dual wield is crap, i wasted so many points on a bunch of offhand attacks that do low damage and destroy your weapon no matter how much weapon preservation you have.
Low dps and crap attacks, you get 1 attack skill for offhand.
Also the parry is bs, you parry about 1/1000 attacks even with lvl 60.
Worst waste of time imho, picked upa 2 hander and instantly watched mobs die twice as fast.

I learned interesting thing with yours comments, but game is not balanced. I started with mage but damage was very low.. Now Im an archer, damage is better (82 with crit), my skills:

[archer/air]
- ranged: I will max all
- tactics: maxing hp and str
- light armor: only passives
- sub: maxing dex
- focus: maxing focus and int
- air: for dex increase, sprint and stun
- life: 20 points in healing Touch

my archer fares well in open areas, build similar to nemesis. just kind fo went with what the game offered out of the box. but it seems , rightly so, that i will suffer in closed areas.has anyone used an archer/melee build? or does it just water down both skills sets?

i mostly solo so contemplating whether i should just start going toward a melee build even though ive invested a lot of time into my archer.

Depends on your play style.
Mass exp leveling then AoE fire and chaos magic, corpse explosion.

One guild member has 80 skills to level 80, is a pure caster. Ranks 1st or 2nd in tier one PvP.
Is a pure caster, can earn over 200k exp an hour solo. Carries a shield and wand.
PvE is pure mass pull AoE kills as quick as possible.
