"Lord British returns to his fantasy RPG roots with Shroud of the Avatar, hearkening back to his innovative early work. "
"Shroud of the Avatar is the “spiritual successor” to Richard’s previous work in the FRP genre. Our primary objectives are to tell a story even more compelling than Ultimas IV-VII, create a virtual world more interactive than Ultima VII, develop deep rich multi-player capabilities beyond combat akin to Ultima Online, and offer a bold new approach to integrate them with “Selective Multi-Player”."
"Shroud of the Avatar is a “buy-to-play” game that, once purchased, does not require a subscription to play! "

It is DEFINITELY supposed to be a spiritual successor to the previous Ultima games. UO was 1 out of a series of 13 games on PC.
The original backers got a lot of rewards and I don't get why a few of them are complaining. First access to the game (and thus player housing lots) and a whole bunch of perks. I know a lot of backers in-game and the vast majority of them are satisfied. Furthermore, there are good number of the best castle and keep lots exclusive reserved for backers, and only backers have access to tax free keep and castle lots.
I also found that while the game does have some pay for advantage elements, they aren't to the point of an unfair advantage and all but a few can be bought with in-game earned currency. Many of those that can't are available from other players who want to trade theirs. (For instance the non-breaking tools with bonuses like engraved tools that were given to backers can often be found on the player market for in-game gold.) Also, almost all of these elements can be bought with the semi-premium currency that can be bought in game.
Honestly, this game is really good as an MMO. It clearly isn't for everyone. It requires a lot of time and dedication to level up your character, and the game mechanics have a very steep learning curve. It is not your typical casual MMO. I would only recommend this game for hardcore RPG fans. That said, I would greatly recommend it for such fans.
Stay away from Steam Level 0 posts. The disgruntled Kickstarter strikes again!
Steam forums are a cesspool of human garbage for the most part, and any game that is EA or Kickstarted gets a troupe of haters that will constantly post negatively no matter what. It's free, and different, you decide.
Yes, dismiss the very people who actually pre-ordered this game in order to get it off the ground to begin with and then contributed to its development...
The game wasn't "free" for kickstarters. That probably explains their disatisfaction.
But we all know in reality only 10% of the time are the kickstarters done how it was supposed to be, and 60-70% of kickstarters fail or get abandoned after recieving funds.
Just try it out, see if you like it. There have been some posts on the forum lately from people who are really enjoying single player.
It's free so why not?
