So no comparisons, but I can give you some tips to get over the beginner hump, because it is a tough one and there are many casualties.
I assume by beginner area you mean the Outskirts. If you haven't gotten to the Outskirts, and really mean the starting battle, then do make sure you finish that and get to the Outskirts. Just push through, don't pick everything up, the first area should only take about 10 minutes if you're talking to everyone. Maybe 15 minutes in the Highvale one (there are a couple more NPC's to talk to in the back half of the courtyard).
Ok, if you're losing interest in the Outskirts, there's a couple things you can do to freshen it up.
One, don't do it all yet, first go to town and open up Advanced Combat with the Combat Trainer. This really gives you a lot of options. (Don't do this if you are already overwhelmed).
Two, skip the Outskirts for now, go to the world map, find a nearby Player Owned Town with smoke coming out of the chimneys (someone is home) and go say hi. Start getting some community time. That's a huge draw of this game anyway, playing with others, and the Outskirts tend to be a pretty solo experience even if there are others doing them at the same time.
Check the Looking for Group tool. See if there are any events happening. If it's a Saturday, come to the PvP tournament and watch from the stands, starts at 4:30 Central Time. Come to the weekend dance parties, say hi, and talk to some other players, find some people who like to play your way.
Go check out the houses, check out some of the libraries people have put together, or the gardens, etc.
Then, after you've seen the "bigger picture" of the game, perhaps do the Outskirts again. Or skip them for now and group up with people and let them show you some harder areas.
Basically the Outskirts are the short tunnel to the entrance to the whole game. Not required, but set up to get you on your feet. If they are hanging you up, just exit immidiately and go check out the rest.
Feel free to /friend Vladamir Begemot, I'm often available to help. You can /w me as well.
Good luck, I hope you find what you're looking for!
I think at this stage id say not really, uo has a cpl decades of content already in it. In time this will rival uo, there is alot here that reminds me of uo.
Eps 2 brings deep sea fishing and treasure maps/hunting as an example.
UO was my favorite game for decades, and I only played the first two years of UO (dad canceled it).
This game surpasses UO in many ways. Better housing, better economy, much more advanced skill tree, no stupid level cap..etc..
One problem with this game as explained by Connell is the terrible first few hours of the game. I did not enjoy them but I forced my self to get through them and it was well worth it.
TLDR: Game in many ways is better than UO, learning curve sucks in SoTA but well worth it.
uhh yea you definately missed something lol
Are you daft?
SotA is INCREDIBLY similar.
From no "levels" to skilling each indiviual skill, for unique builds, to locations being ripped right out of Ultima lore (see Yew, Despise, Britania, etc). Lord British is even present in almost every Ultima ever, much less Online.
Hell, even the very IDEA of materializing from another realm (the real world) to become an "avatar" in another, is very present in Ultima lore.
After all, that's how Lord Cantabrigian British even came to rule the lands of Britania in the first place. Came from the real world to the outlands, via a moongate.
I actually agree here.
Once all the bugs are woked out, I would love to see the stat and skill caps reimposed. Although, maybe at something higher than 225 and 700. Part of my frustration with UO was the fight between things I wanted to do, and having the skills and stats to do do.
Luckily though, once you earned the skill points it was easy to remove them from one place and put them somewhere else. Still, this time around, i'd love to see a little more leeway given. Somewhere in the realm of 300 for stats and 1200 for skills.
Using decks you are capped.
