Is the big bone required?
is it possible to get around gold farming by finding enough bones from chests? Or access new area (and new bones) by freezing water?

To the best of my knowledge, it's required. If you can access that area, and have exhausted all the available money chests, there's a room with respawning money in the northwest of forest headed to ice. Equip the money vacuum talisman and run through that. It'd mindless but it's a couple minutes at most to get the money you need.

I don't know if it's required, but if you wanted to try obtaining the next movement ability without grinding money for that particular bone, you should know to check each zone for bone drops. Each zone has a fixed maximum number of bones drops you can collect before none will drop there.
Naturally I have wandered around in each zone excessively enough (thanks to the poor quick-travel QoL), and the bones have stopped dropping. That's why I am specifically asking about chests and freezing water.

Bones are 100% required for movement upgrades to progress the story. I saved up 8k and was a little disappointed it was only like 10-15 bones for the throne but at lvl 27 or 29 you get another ability.

IDK if you can grind those bones or if you need to purchase them to get to that level.
Bones completely stopped dropping for me when I needed 5 more for the progression ability, and I think it's pretty safe to assume the 8K is basically mandatory unless you are lucky enough to find some in chests. I don't know why they would lock it like that, especially when most players would overlook it in the shop and likely spend their money on badges for passive buffs.

From what I can tell, even with the bone drop badge equipped, there is definitely a cap on how many bones can be dropped by area, because they are literally raining from enemies and completely stops after a bit.
I just got the achievement for unlocking every power and I never bought the one in the desert. So I assume you don't have to buy it if you get enough from other areas.

I believe I searched the 'accessible' areas (before the onsen/volcano) quite extensively before giving in and buying that bone. Was it just a few very well hidden chests that you found, or were you using some terraforming tricks such as freezing ice and others I don't know of?

I didn't freeze anything. Hard to say if any of the chests were well hidden or not. I don't think they are but maybe I'm just really good at finding chests.
I'm on hard so I get extra drops and I've always had at least some items with +luck on them, so I probably got every random drop bone that's possible.
The pacing is definitely off on the bones, and the desert and rapids not giving you 10 bones for boss completion is probably the root of it, at least in my experience. You have to run around and grind desert, ice and fire zone to get 2-3 levels (looking at you lvl 31 ability upgrade) in order to progress. The Dash and the Bash should probably be bumped up before, say, the 3rd sub-weapon hot key since that's basically useless padding.

It's weird scouring the map for an opening to the next destination marker to realize you just have to grind some random mobs.

Also random Demon Dash note. I kept hitting R1 demon power button and then dashing but if you hit the two buttons at the same time you do a fast dash, skipping the Demon charge animation. Makes running around the map slightly less tedious.

More precisely, that should be press dash first and then quickly press R1.
