What is mana/magic power/the blue spheres?

I'm loving this little game!

However, I'm a handful of dungeons in and I cant figure out what the mana bar does. I have no casting spells as far as I'm aware.

Too add to the mystery, sometimes I look up and notice that the bar has drained for some unknown reason!

Some items require mana to be used, some equipments give you bonuses but drain your mana, and some skills drain your mana as well. If you open the stats screen ('c' button) you can see those and figure out which is doing what.

Additionally, if you are playing as the witch, her attacks drain mana to do extra damage. If you have no mana, she does regular damage.

There are also enemies that drain your mana (Mermaid, Dark Mage, and Evil Fairy)
