When a game says "we have co-op" all players progress their story. Not just the host.
That's what this game DOESN'T DO, according to OP.
I was very much hoping that co-op would progress both players equally.
From the store page:
Four Player Co-Op: Battle through the expansive campaign alone or team up as a four-player typhoon of destruction online in campaign co-op mode. Tackle challenging primary missions or thrilling side quests while maintaining your own ninja style with customizable armor, items, and valuable loot from your triumphs.
So, yeah, pretty much flat out said you could go through the campaign in co-op mode.
As for how to handle people being at different points in the game, it's quite simple. If you're both at the same point, you both get completion. So if you're joining someone else's game who's at the same point in the story as you, and you go through some missions, when you go into your solo game, those missions would be done.
Actually, no, most of the co-op stuff I play has shared progression.
It doesn't affect me personally, as I'm going through solo anyway. But it's just a bad design choice on the Devs' part. Which is a shame because they did so well in pretty much every other aspect.
With luck they'll patch that at some point.
Let's hope they listen and "fix" that co-op issue.
