why do people think Wang is Japanese?
Wang is a Chinese surname. if his Japanese, his name should be kojima, yamada , kafabudaiusda or some ♥♥♥♥ like that.

Lo Wang actually is Chinese, the game's just set in Japan (well a caricature of it) and he works for a Japanese conglomerate.
I always thought that Lo Wang was half-Japanese and half-Chinese when I began playing the first game

Ah, so he's Scandinavian. Makes sense I guess. Lo(ki) Wang. Fits the personality a little, too.

Seriously, though, I figured that the setting itself was a reflection on how it mixes different aspects from Japan and China, and Lo Wang being at least part Chinese by his surname would match that as well.

Plus, his dash is basically Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon levels of Kung Fu.

He's the embodiement of Asian stereotypes. That is why Chinese and Japanese references are used for, and by, the same character. Try not to think too deeply about it. It's all a joke.

Western media rarely gets it right when it comes to Asian characters. specifically, regarding the nationality. they can't seem to distinguish between Chinese ,Japanese and Korean. it's a understandable mistake. Japanese culture borrowed a lot from Ancient China. so the average white guy who isn't into that culture will be misinformed. usually the "Asian" character in movies and game is a Japanese/Chinese hybrid. they'll have elements of Chinese culture but Japanese as well. it's quite hilarious. it just shows that the creator didn't do much research into the character they're representing.

playing Fallout 3 Anchorage DLC. there a Chinese commander at the end. if your speech check is high enough, you can convince him to surrender. but they'll commit seppuku, which is only a Japanese thing. this is an example.

That's what I thought at first, turns out the SW background is actually pretty worked out, and Wang legit is a Chinese character working in Japan.
