Character customization...?
Are there any options for customizing the appearance of the player character?

i'd like to know that aswell.. i did read about a Female Character "PAX West Exclusive" something..

No. You always play as Wang, in multiplayer everyone sees themself as Wang and the other characters as part of some special force team from the story. There is no character customization or female characters.

I want to roll a character named SUM YUNG GAI, seriously, or HUANG LO, as an alternative.

Well, unless you have one of those Pax West promo skin codes, there still is no female look option for the multiplayer.

I did zero codes, purchased after release, and have a female skin in my dropdown for multiplayer skins. Hood dude, mask dude, and one lady.

the options are under the multiplayer panel to change skin type and color.

for your avatar, anyway. :)
