If the game is not responding, then before you send the Death Star there, send a probe droid, and see if Han Solo and Chewbacca are there.
It's a known bug in the game that if you fire the Death Star on a planet with those two on it, the game will crash.
EDIT: Let us know if the situation changes...Or not.
Cheers

You normally fire the superlaser by clicking the firing switch in the selection area's left side. Which resembles the switch they use in the movies.
(Except that you can also fire it by hitting Shift + D, which you said you already tried).
If you've won the battle, and have control of Alderaan's space, then on the Map you could try dragging the Death Star to an orange space next to Alderaan that says "Destroy Planet" (It's the same orange space you use for "Spy", "Raid", and "Neutralize Hero".)
Oh, then you've gained control of Alderaan, if you're allowed to build stuff there.
Yeah, you're not allowed to blow up your own planets.
You might try removing everyone from there, and let the Rebels attack Alderaan and reclaim it. Then you can take it back, and blow it up. (Don't bother with a Land Battle, you won't be needing it)
