Tips for Galactic Conquest as the Empire?
So I've been trying to do Galactic Conquest using the Empire and I'm having some trouble. (Slightly long-winded post incoming, I apologize.)

I'm playing the relatively small map where you start with only 1 planet, and I set the game to start at tech level 1. I wanted to start on a smaller map before I try out the biggest ones and also play with all the different stuff while I work my way up to the top units.

It's almost day 100 now and I only control 4 planets and can't figure out how to continue expanding my Empire. The Rebels and Corruption forces both have too many units for me to both attack a planet and keep my current ones from being taken instead. Even early in the game I had the same problem just on a smaller scale. I just logistically couldn't manage to expand AND defend the few planets I already had. I only have enough population for one strong fleet and one strong ground force. I've luckily had both enemies attack Kuat where I have my super fleet of Darth Vader's Executor plus most of the star destroyer-riding heroes and couple frigates stationed. Due to this the enemy usually retreats after my heroes and fighters massacre the front end of their force.

The problem is that I need to use this big fleet to head my attack on other planets, but if I move it away then the rebels/zann will bring their usual huge fleets and end up capturing the planet. I only have enough pop to field a handfull frigates outside of my main fleet, and anything less than what's in my main gets wrecked by the huge enemy fleets that try to attack me. (same issue with my ground force of AT-ATs/troopers and General Veers and my backup army being a few average units) Then if I move my fleet and my ground force to take back the planet, the one I just went to capture will get taken since I can't defend it. I'm basically stuck in a loop where I need more population to make the units to defend my planets as I go on my conquest, but to get those units I need more planets.

I'm only playing on medium, so do I just suck or is there some obvious strategy I should be trying to do so I can get the ball rolling on expansion without getting stuck like this? Only had the game for a few days and I love it though regardless.

I'm having the same problem (new to the game just got it today and much different than anything I've played; company of heros and age of empires mostly) and the thing i've realized is to get the credit count going and start building a massive army on one planet and small ones on the others than with the massive (talking early game so i dont mean like massive massive) army start taking over planets, now its not the best and usually after i get 2-4 planets is when i start having problems because i've never just been good at closing a game... (and i hate losing units, i like to try and beat every mission with as few as possible casualties :P)

Step one: reset
Step two: build one massive army
Step three: rush every planet you can attack as fast as you can
Step four: ?
Step five: profit!

This strategy is intended to wreck havoc for the enemy, but you're also leaving yourself wide open for attacks. Also try to balance the attacks between the two factions so one doesn't absorb the other. I recommend carving a corner of the map and expanding from there, that way you don't have to worry about multiple frontlines. Once you get a good sized army, build a second one and start reclaiming the planets you left behind while still going on the offensive. The offensive is the most important part. You can't let your enemy rebuild any armies.

I suppose the enemy just had a really hard time balancing enough planets to have the population for two armies. Eventually I grabbed another planet just because dumb luck let them not take one of my own in exchange for once.

I tried toughing it out and holding my position until I could build the Death Star. Thanks to that I started on a slow rampage into the Consortium's space next to mine. I was orginally going to try and stop the rebels first but IG-88 blew up my Death Star once while I was queing up buildings so I switched to killing off the the Consortium so my Death Star would be safer. (I reloaded when it got blown up since I WTF'd and had to look up that it was IG-88 who hacked it.)

I've since eliminated the Consortium from the game, with a little help from the rebels who also attacked them, and now I've been building up my armies until I'm ready to attack the rebels full on. The rebels have an enormous amount of MC-30's and Assault Frigates in their fleets (like 50+ of each) so I have no idea how I'm going to finish them off, but I'm gonna try!

I suggest you bring the Death Star and the Super Star Destroyer! :D

Seriosly man are you playin on hard, beacuse I never had this kind of problems on medium. Then again, regarding FoC I have only played as Consortium and that to was a long time ago.

They do it on Medium too. In my most recent game, as Rebels on the full map galactic conquest, the Consortium had dozens of Keldabes at Mandalore, just making more and more, and sometimes sending a force of about 15 of them to slam my nearby planets. By the end of my game there was over 50 of them at Mandalore. I had to take them out by using raid fleets to chip away at the ground defenses and take the planet below, build two ion cannons on the surface, then send repeated fleets of dozens of B-Wings and MC30s to whiddle them down to nothing.

I find the AI masses certain ship types quite often in my many galactic conquest playthroughs.
