Star Wars EAW Gold Pack Help! D3D9 Application "Generic application error"

So my game worked on my computer just fine until recently. I was able to play both Empire at War and Forces of Corruption without problems. That recently changed. Now when I try to start it, it give me this message,

D3D9 Application
Generic application error. Enable debug output for detailed information.

Switching to the reference rasterizer, a software device that implements the entire Direct3D feature set, but runs very slowly.


When I hit ok, it gives me this message,

D3D9 Application
Could not reset the Direct3D device.

This application will now exit.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

after scowering the previous posts on the problem(which is more then 2 more years on what i found), the only positive thing i found was a steam verification and and a restart, other that.......

This problem is most likely being caused by a corrupted Direct X, go download the lastest from microsoft and reinstall it - it should be fine after that.

So I went to the microsoft website and downloaded both the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer and the Platform Update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 (KB2670838). Both say that I have the latest directx installed already and wont do anything else. Unless there is a special way to reinstall it other than this, your way did not work as my game still gives me the same error as above. I have reinstalled the actual game and validated its files several times as well. Anything else I could try?

I am now having the same problem i wanted to say it was cause i messed with the sound settings and a few other things so i deleted and am redownloading it

I fixed it byright clicking properties local files and delete local game content then redownloading but i also had mods

Update: My game just started working again. It didn't start working until about half a day after I did the above so I can't confirm thats what fixed it. When mine stopped working I hadn't been messing with any settings beforehand. I guess there is more than one way to reach this error.

I did everything in this post. I didnt start working until about two days after I did them though.

Problem is i did everything in this post and all post i could find but still not fixed ... force of corruption work but not empire at war

unfortunately I have no idea how I fixed it. It just started working again a couple days later. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Ahh ok ... because my game was fine 5 days ago until a random moment it stopped working ... did you did anything particular even a small thing

Ok i found it ! You need to go in the folder of star wars and put on all .Exe related to star wars empire at war the windows 7 compatibility mode
Right clic on the .exe run compatibility mode windows 7 i had to do it on runme.exe , runme2.exe and in gamedata sweaw.exe

9 years later and I am having the same problem.
