Initially it's nice. When you play it (be it EAW or FOC) enough little things start to annoy you especially if you're playing against the AI. There are nice mods and multiplayer is fine. Not a bad buy in any way, shape or form.

Great game. Thrawn's Revenge made it even greater for me. http://www.moddb.com/mods/thrawns-revenge

I love the game but it can get awfully repetitive esp when you kinda really want to progress at certain points. Also, I wish the galactic map was turn based or that you could issue orders while paused. But if you love SW this is the ultiamte strategic feel. One pro tip i noticed though. NEVER use the auto-resolve. Start the battle and use the fast forward button, if you must (remember to slow it down to use special attacks like the ion cannon and hypervelocity gun) but never autoresolve. the AI is on drugs with that :)

It's a great game. You'll likely spend hours at a time playing it.

If you love Star Wars, then you'll definitely enjoy this game. A lot of famous characters show up, pretty much they're all playable. Even a few Expanded Universe characters, like Mara Jade and Grand Admiral Thrawn show up.

Playing as the Rebellion, you get access to raids, spying, and characters like Mon Mothma, Captain Antilles, Admiral Ackbar, and Han/Chewie.
And you get Red Squardron (with Luke Skywalker) to handle the Death Star when it will inevitably show up.

Playing as the Empire, you get access to powerful technologies, walkers, the Death Star, and characters like the Emperor, Darth Vader, General Colonel Veers, and Boba Fett.
With the Death Star, you get to blow up whatever worlds you wish (even worlds like Naboo, Endor, Kashyyyk, etc) ...though you the player may feel like a heel afterwards.

I'd recommend you start with the base game, and hold off playing the Forces of Corruption expansion until later, when you've got the hang of the core game itself.
Overall, there is a learning curve to the game, but it's a gentle curve. The game goes out of it's way to help you master it.
