The remake mod is on the workshop.
This is the successor. While it was simplified (unfortunately, no more sabotage etc), the game has been fleshed out a lot as a solid RTS game in both space & land (and that i have rarely seen).
I'd say just play it, the game on it's own is good even if you don't like star wars.
Total War in space/Ground: Yes, but it has it's own style.
How does it work: You conquer the galaxy basically. And protect the emperor/death star.. or as the rebels, you do the inverse. Or as the Consortium, you have your own goals.
Custom battles: Yes
Replay: huge. i've played this game from start to finish a hundred times over. There are 3 factions to play, they are asynchronous (which i personally enjoy), and you get challenge
The issue with modern games is that they are often too complex for a good strategic AI. This game is still much more chess that are easier to implement, making the strategic AI competitive. The tactical AI uses basic combat principles like focusing fire, attacking with an aggro score, and does a fair job.
There is no joy then bringing a death star to a major battle and start blowing up ships (& the planet if you wish. You pull the lever yourself :) )
