Tips on space battles
I'm new to the game and am playing as empire (dark side ftw). During space battles I find I'm always losing many of my large frigate ships. The Rebel ships always seem to be much stronger than mine and take more hits.

How large should a fleet be or what are some good combinations for a really effective fleet?

Try to use a combination of larger and smaller ships to help eliminate smaller foes such as bombers and fighters. The rebellion ships are slightly stronger than the empires IMO, however with good use of each ships abilities the empire can destroy a rebel fleet easily. In my time of playing, Star Destroyers work best in groups with support from a few smaller ships. Get the frigates to concentrate fire on the enemies larger ships and let the smaller ships engage the enemies smaller ships to stop larger ships becoming easy prey as they do not necessarily focus on the biggest ships. Just a little advice, not sure if it's very helpful, but it has helped me over the years. Once you have many hours of gameplay under your belt you will find tactics most suitable for your own style of play.

okay... 6 victorys. 1 tartan patrol ship. thats 20 points of imperial goodness right there
gives you 12 fighter groups and 6 bombers. you really dont need or want acclimators

send just the fighters after the hanger and the bombers after the sheild generator unsupported.

move the victorys and the support ship up to the edge of the enemy station and have the
Victorys pick off the ship killing weapons first.
the Tartan patrol ship engages the Y wings and X wings. (fire for effect works wonders)

works for me every time. the ties are expendable. (they dont show up on losses)
tartan too as its cheep and quick to build.
