Mod advice

I've just bought this game, never played it before.

It;s obviously an old game, should I play the game 1st without any mods or are there must have mods?

I love playing this game with mods, and there are a lot of great mods out there. But I would say that you should play the game without mods first. Since this isn't Skyrim, where a lot of mods add nothing but quality of life changes. The mods for this game are, mostly, all about new units, planets, conquests, maybe even entirely new or revamped core-functions.

The mod support for this game is basically unlike any other. You can not really use multiple mods together, like you could in Skyrim or Minecraft. There is a way to use sub-mods with the main mods, though, I don't really know how, since I never used sub-mods. And as far as I am concerned, there is no mod that only levels up the graphics. There are plenty of mods out there, which use better graphics, like the Remake Mod, but these mods also come around the corner with a lot of new content.

Yeah, modding for this game is far different than most newer games. You generally only can use 1 mod at a time.

Just play the game as-is until you get the hang of things, then try out mods

Play the campaigns and some skirmish that should be fine. After that i'd recommend Thrawn's Revenge or Fall of the Republic if you wanna play during the clone wars (both made by the same mod team) but before you play them you should watch 1 or 2 videos about those mods by the youtube channel called "corey loses" who made them. My favorite mod is Awakening of the rebellion but it is very different and difficult so it's not beginner friendly.
