'Ion Cannon Firing'

I keep hearing this in space battles. What does it mean?

Is that a ground to space cannon?

I assume you're playing the Galactic Conquest as the Empire. If so: The ion cannon is a building that can be build by the rebels on the ground (like barracks or vehicle factories) which makes the struck ship vulnerable by deactivating it. (shields for example) This is especially dangerous for Star Destroyer and the Executor.

Is there anyway to defend against it?

No. unless your playing as the consortium and you use a defiler to blow it up. errr bearing in mind you have to corrupt the planet first.

Tyber Zhan is right. The only thing you can do is corrupting the planet via defiler and then sabotage the ion cannon. Or (and this is the only option if you are playing as the empire) you can life with that and try to win the battles as fast as possible.
