Corellian Gunships are really neat. A single one can provide decent fighter screening capabilities, and if you get 5 or so on the field at once they can take on much larger ships pretty well if you focus on the right hardpoints and put a Nebulon B or something at the front for enemy ships to fire on. Corellian Corvettes and the Sundered Heart are also pretty good though.
Many Rebel cruisers have an ability to boost shield power that greatly increases shield regen for a duration, and they also lack shield generator hardpoints, so the only way to kill the shielding is to actually burn though them with lasers and ion cannons. They're more about durability than firepower, so make sure they have good fighter/bomber support or a numbers advantage if you're going up against units of about equal worth. The Home Run is considerably better than the typical Mon Cal cruiser IIRC, so you should probably be dragging him into any serious fights against multiple ISDs.
In FoC they get a strong advanced bomber unit and a really annoying frigate armed with multiple proton torpedo launchers that specialize in taking on capital ships.
Rebel infantry is generally pretty versatile. Getting a few regular platoons with a few PLEX soldier squads and a couple of Infiltrators will pretty much take care of anything if you have enough of them. Just be careful around enemy heroes, they have some good anti-infantry options and there's a few abilities that convert nearby infantry to the Empire's side, which really sucks if they take more than a few units.
Air Speeders are really annoying but honestly not very helpful if you aren't using them in very large numbers, which I wouldn't recommend because they get instantly shut down by any anti-air options available to the Empire.
I don't really have anything else to say about land honestly.
