However as your new to mods in this game get ready for crashes, your probably going to have more than a few so save often and with multiple save slots. Good luck.
It's the equivalent to Half Life 2's FakeFactory mod.
Absolute mishmash of music from Command and Conquer, Mad Max and Mass Effect, none of which fit within Star Wars.
Auto-resolve function broken (you always lose no matter how good your fleet and how weak the enemy fleet is).
Unit scaling is absolutely terrible to the point it's very hard to see anything that isn't a capital ship.
The same applies to all the projectiles like lasers and so on.
Unit icons and hardpoint icons are missing their "backgrounds" so you essentially have black icon, on black space maps, with half pixel width outline as the only thing to distinguish them.
It's an absolute mess to try and target anything specific at a glance without having to pause the game, zoom and look for what you want to target.
And then there's the bugged ship models, sure they do look pretty (as do the particles) but that's where the positives od this mod end.
Victory-class Star Destroyers spawn with half of their hull literally missing, only to disappear entirely few seconds later and then hyperspace-in again few seconds later, now with hull visible properly. There's more bugs like this one.
It's honestly a horrible mess with only the model, particle and texture detail being the only positive thing about the mod, but what point does any of that serve when most of the models will be ant-sized (fighters are quite literally 1 pixel, maybe 2-3 pixels big for bigger ones on 1080p resolution) and the game is a mess from gameplay standpoint?
In terms of FoC (expansion) mods, I suggest trying Thrawn's Revenge, it also overhauls visuals with many much better models, textures and particles, but also having more complex and completely overhauled gameplay mechanics and with none of the issues I described above that EaW Remake suffers from.
Republic at War is another great mod worth playing, and while not as high quality as Thrawn's Revenge, makes up for it by setting the game in the Clone Wars period which is naturally drastically different from the more traditional Rebels/New Republic vs Empire/Imperial Remnant.
And finally, Phoenix Rising, focusing mostly on the post Episode 3 to shortly after Episode 6 time period, another very high quality mod with some custom mechanics, new content and whatnot.
And if you'd like something non-Star Wars, the Stargate Pegasus Chronicles is a stellar Stargate-themed total conversion mod.
For regular, non-FoC version of the game, the only one I can really recommend is Conflict in Space, which was made by a friend of mine who unfortunately has disappeared years ago. Pioneered adding many new features to the game that later actually were officially added by the developers themselves in the FoC expansion such as orbital bombardment, Death Star II with manual targeting laser capable of destroying larger ships and very large ships such as Vader's Executor Super Star Destroyer flagship.
It's worth mentioning that all those mods are available on Workshop right now.
There is another good mod that is NOT available on workshop at the moment due to still being worked on for new, stable release, namely Awakening of the Rebellion focusing on the Original Trilogy time period. However you can grab the 2.60 Open Beta version from its ModDB page if you google for it.
