If that sounds silly it is because it is. Unfortunately it is also true.
That works for skirmish or attacking forces, at least. If you are just defending a level 4 space station vs a large imperial fleet that contains the executor, then you're probably doomed and should focus on knocking out as many of their units as possible before your station explodes.
Unless you have x40-x50 squadrons. x50 is an extra x10 for reenforcements to replace the ones you lose during the battle. The massive tanks are easily dispatched in this way which is why I said it is silly. As I said you do not need a single capital ship.

No fun without capital ships. Sadly squadrons are way too OP because they simply do not die easy even when you try to include ships like Lancers, or the Alliance equivalent which are built specificly to take out fighters and bombers.
Capital ships seem pretty much helpless and at the mercy of squadrons.
Capital ships should have a toggle to switch weapons to point defense and when in that mode they should chew up bombers and fighters. While in point defense mode they should not be able to direct fire on other capital ships. Point defense mode would then only target squadrons directed at that specific ship. Least that is my dream idea for a MOD. It would make space combat so much more interesting.
Try Trawn's Revenge. In that mod nothing can ignore shields so it might be exactly what you're looking for
I have Thrawns Revenge. Squadrons rule. Still way too OP.
