Report a translation problem
So I just stopped using it for tracking purpose as it is to inaccurate to be of any use. Though I use the atlas as a minimap still.
EDIT: could be though that I am wrong and the color is showing the depth of where to look for it. So will have to see if someone has figured this one out already.
Edit: I wondered that too actually, if the brighter it is the deeper you may have to dig or vice versa. Would be nice to have a light shed on this bit of mystery, lol.
It's not deeper, but the concentration. The actual spot / lightness just signifies that there are resources in the vicinity from the previous time (like a day before or so). Certain resources do spawn in certain bands, but iron can be found anywhere pretty much - you might find bigger veins lower down though). I have some co-ords on Gravidias Te if you want the best spot (it's a really bright lump of iron ;)
