I'm afraid that no matter how good the game might be, the mixed steam reviews and chronically low player count will inevitably lead to the complete abandonment of this game. Having mixed reviews is usually a death sentence for early access games, even if it's undeserved.
On SteamDB it looks like 30-or-so players get on every evening for the past two years. Kinda takes the "massive" out of MMO.
I want to play it because it looks like it's added some cool new ideas to the voxel building genre, so I'll probably end up buying it despite my reservations. I just wish it didn't seem like such a gamble.
1. People who don't buy the product will make the product unsuccessful.
2. If those people who don't buy the product would just buy it instead, the product would succeed.
I mean, I can't fault that logic I guess.
Yes, people who doubt the success of the game and therefore don't buy it will indeed be the downfall of the game. That's business. If I decide to buy it so that it's more successful, I might just end up with a dead game and a small sense of pride in myself for supporting that dead game.
One doubter alone deciding to buy will have no statistically significant effect on the downward spiral (or vicious cycle) that the game is currently caught in. New players are required for the reviews to improve, but new players will not tend to appear until the reviews improve (or the price is lowered).
Nobody wants to be the first to act, since that carries with it the risk of them losing thier investment. If the game weren't so outlandishly expensive for Early Access, losing their investment would be much less of an issue.
Sales (like the current one) could help. Let's keep our fingers crossed that the bump in player count sticks around, and that they leave positive reviews.

I am on Soum as well same server.
Frame it however you like - 34.95 with no sales or discounts for an EA title over the lats two years is .. funny. I'm here on the forum now because this came across my radar again. The Charts app shows everage of 2 and 3 players daily less than a year ago.
Enjoying a lot the game. Totally worth for me.
But it's true that i dont really care about meeting people. I'll have to understand how to chat first.

This game IS amazing and should be given a chance... however (not a negative however, just a however :P)
However... this is the SECOND? version of the game... I bought this game last year? and refund feeling VERY salty that the game was *not as advertised* and refunded... made a VERY negative review and etc..
However Luke Turbulenz (the dev guy) kept popping up every some often on my original review... so after a bit of back and forth between us and once i could afford to buy the game again i did so... I have not been dissapointed this time round, but i have stopped playing for a while... because it is still EA and i have exhausted the current content this game offers (at the moment)
IS this game going to be full release? is it going to be a SUCCESSFUL full release? are they going to face plant the dirt like so mamny other EA games do? Who knows?
But what i personally know is, i have 100% got my £28.99 out of this game and then some
EDIT: Ahhh Luke has changed his name again lol
