The boat moves too slow and won't move fast enough for the time given, no matter what direction I move in

Also if its specifically the raft races (the ones you need a shovel to operate) you are talking about turning v-sync on will also help a lot. v-sync turned off tends to screw up a lot of things in the game (which is very useful for speed-running though).
