What is DirectX Runtime?

I'm extremely new to PC gaming and it won't let me start the game because I don't have "DirectX Runtime" installed. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game, steam, and the DirectX Runtime software dozens of times and nothing has happened. How do I get this game to work at all or do I need to give up and refund? I just wanted to play a dumb, digging game and I can't even get that.

DirectX is an API for hardware communication. Graphics engines use it to control your graphics card (among other things). Usually you should never have to install it yourself, because games almost always install everything they need including runtimes. Not sure why this is happening for you. Could you share the exact error message? It also has to be the correct version.

Microsoft has DirectX downloads on their website https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=35, if you use linux though idk if you can install it
