Honest answer is, it's about digging a hole down in your backyard to find supposed treasure down there. You sell stuff you find as you dig to unlock upgrades to dig better/faster. As to what "treasure" is down there, thats the surprise. It's not a very good surprise, weak point of the game honestly, but it exists.
It's about finding the existence of life. Are we truly alone on the surface or are there mole people living down under?
