Am I supposed to be able to kill the mole somehow? It kills me almost instantly when I walk in even when it's facing a different way, I'm assuming I'm supposed to be able to explore down there as the area looks quite large.

You must have been unlucky with it deciding to turn your way while you where passing it. It shouldnt agro if it doesnt see you. Even if it sees you, you might try outrun it since your speeds are quite similar.
