Launch error
When I try to launch The complete saga I get an error "Failed to create D3D device.Application will now exit. Error = 0x8876086c"

I have tried changing my refresh rate to 60 and I still get the same error, is there any fixes for this?

I just got it working on my machine! Fwiw I'm on a Lenovo Legion Y540. So, to do it, I had to use some software, the Custom Resolution Utility (CRU). Check it out here: https://www.monitortests.com/forum/Thread-Custom-Resolution-Utility-CRU

So, after downloading the .zip and extracting it to a separate folder, run the main .exe called CRU.

Once you pull up CRU, you have a lot of options. Before messing around, be careful - you can easily mess it up in which case you'll have to launch your computer in Safe Mode to delete your changes (I had to do this and I thought about crying, do not recommend). If that happens, you can follow these instructions: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-your-pc-in-safe-mode-in-windows-10-92c27cff-db89-8644-1ce4-b3e5e56fe234

All you need to do is, first, make sure your active monitor is selected in the top drop down. Then, go to the Detailed Resolutions section. You should already have a slot created based on your default settings. Below, you can click "Add..." I'd highly recommend adding a second one over editing the existing one, so that you can change back to default settings easily.

In the Add menu, I changed the Timing section to "Automatic (PC)." This defaulted the Refresh Rate to 60hz for me. You might want to change that manually - all that matters, though, is that Refresh Rate. After saving the new detailed resolution setup, I selected it and hit the Up Arrow below to set it to my primary settings. Then, I restarted my computer to enable the changes and it worked.

Here is an album of screenshots to see what I mean: https://postimg.cc/gallery/CVF88w6

First screenshot shows my overall config, second is my settings that work with this game, third is my default settings. Also, it says Manual in the top drop down even in the second screenshot - it always goes back to that after saving your settings.

To further clarify - any changes you make in CRU require a full reboot to take effect so while this fix works, it's a bit of a pain to switch back and forth.

@n3k

I updated them and it still didnt work. Are there any other fixes for this?

Are you using a monitor with a higher refresh rate than 60hz? I have a 144hz monitor and am facing the same issue - I have seen others mention that this might be the cause. Haven't found a fix, though.

Yeah I am using a 144hz, But I was able to change it to 60hz. It still wont launch though. Im thinking about trying to refund if I cant get this fixed soon

Hey, a quick mistake I made - you don't actually have to reboot your computers, just your graphics drivers. Thankfully, in the .zip file for the CRU application is 3 other .exes, two of which do just that. You can just run restart or restart64 and it will update to your new settings, no reboot necessary. Sorry!

Im gonna try it today. Im still wondering, is CRU safe to use or does it have any bad effects or something like that?
heather Jun 28, 2021 @ 2:37pm
I haven't found anything suggesting bad effects, however, since you're overriding your computer's default display settings, you can set it to something that is incompatible with your browser, but you can fix that by switching to Safe Mode and turning off CRU / changing that setting.
