There is controller configuration in big picture mode that can be used to map the DS4 to be a regular direct input controller, which might help. I'm not sure if it will matter on a Mac though. I don't have a DS4 but I am pretty sure you do not want to have PS4 configuration support turned on, because it is for configuring special behavior like a steam controller. Just use whatever shows up at the bottom when the controller is plugged in where it tells you to press a button in a certain position on the controller and maps it to the correct one. That might already be done by steam though since it is such a popular controller.
Like hell, you can easily just buy a third party Xbox gamepad for a fraction of what it costs to buy a new first party, and it'll still work just as good
