Stuck in 3rd person view

I just got the game. I skipped the tutorial because my 4yo son just wants to drive a bus. I'm using an XBox controller. I only have 3rd person view when driving the bus. Pressing Y changes to first person view but now I am standing next to the driver's seat and walking around. Getting back into the driving seat switches to 3rd person view. There are no view controls in the controls menu. What am I missing? Thanks!

You can switch between cockpit and 3rd person view by pressing the left joystick of the Xbox 360 controller.
