BattlEye required for single-player, why?
I don't want to install a rootkit to be able to play a single-player game. It's 2025, whoever wanted to play this game that badly without paying for it has already found a cracked version, just stop treating your actual paying customers worse.

The game fails to launch after installation if you don't allow BattlEye installation even when you only intend to play the single-player campaign. It _may_ be possible to disable through the Steam launch option that pudding shared, so I'll try that.
If it doesn't work in the Steam options, you can open the Rockstar Launcher itself and disable BE for GTA V in those settings. Still doesn't let you into online, but you're after singleplayer anyway.

1. Right-click on GTA 5 in your library list
2. Select Properties
3. Enter -nobattleye in the Launch Options field

What makes you think the anti cheat is to prevent piracy? It's goal is to prevent cheaters, not piracy.

Cheaters? In my single-player game?

Thanks, I'll give that a shot.

Battle Eye is only for Online. It can be deactivated in the Rockstar application. If you've already installed it, then it will remain in your game files unless you reinstall the entire game, but will remain deactivated. Turn it off in the Rockstar application. Steam has little control over Battle Eye.

If the game continues to fail at launch, you'll need to reinstall the game without activating Battle Eye. Make sure the Battle Eye option is unchecked in the Rockstar application before you launch the game.

If you're curious about online, you don't need to worry about grievers from PVP or cheaters. Make a private session (server). You won't see anyone unless you invite them.

you can just delete the battleye folder. when you start the game it will say start failed and then just click retry and that's it. and if you're not going to play multiplayer and want to save disk space just delete all folders that start with mp...

Thanks, that worked. Manually launched the Rockstar launcher after installation prior to first launch from Steam and disabled BatllEye from there. Launching from Steam then didn't try to install that crap before the game started the 1st time (which is what happens by default).

Thanks, ended up changing this in the settings of the Rockstar launcher (had to launch it manually as opposed to from Steam), as suggested by KGBCowgirl, and that did the trick.
If BattlEye is a rootkit, so are all cheat engines and anti-cheats (EAC, Vanguard) running in kernel mode.

Is there a news article talking about how an anti-cheat allows malware to infect the system

I don't care. I'm playing a single-player game and use the PC for stuff other than games. Running extra crap that only makes sense as a trade-off for making cheating on online games slightly harder is enough to make me not play a game that I wasn't that invested in in the first place.

Hmmm... Has your PC become a target of rootkits before, to the point that you became so paranoid of BattlEye being one? I do understand rootkits can be so hazardous with some of them being able to bypass Secure Boot and infect the motherboard's BIOS

This works well. The launcher doesn't even try to install BattlEye.
