Steam or GOG?
Hi Everyone,

I hope that this message finds you all well. Just a simple question, is the Steam version of this game worth picking up as it is slightly cheaper than the GOG version?

Thanks in advance!

I recommend GOG version. The reason being is that GOG games tend to be optimised for current and new gen systems. Steam games however, tend to be abandoned when new hardware roll out.

I have steam version, but I can also recommend GoG version. Especially for DF2:JK1 the gog version is more advanced. The GoG staff even grants Win10 support on their store page: http://www.gog.com/game/star_wars_jedi_knight_dark_forces_ii

The steam version just granted support for Windows 2000, XP and Vista, what were the modern OS'es of that time of release (2009). The GoG version has also the CD soundtracks. The steam versions are missing them ingame and can be restorded only with a mod (chech out the steam forums)

In case of Dark Forces 1, the versions should be the same. But GoG is often advancing more the DOSBox. The Steam version is not perfect and has still to be configured manually for best experience.

As for Dark Forces, for me the steam version worked out of box on win7, so I didnt have any problems. JK1 GoG version seems better than steam version, so you should buy that, but again JK1 qworked perfectly on my older laptop with Win7, only needed to install the mod to get all the original soundtrack. I've played lots of old games on steam and never had any problems. If you have problems you can get refund anyway. I like keep my games on one service, even that Gog seems very good service, thanks to the Galaxy I might even buy some games on it now.

Sincerely: NEITHER. I just launched it and wondered why, as it happens that often with other GOG and Steam Dosbox games, the music is configured to be opl3 instead of general midi. You know, just a link to the installation program would not be THAT difficult.

Buy the whole damn series from GOG! All of them are great, the main issue being Steam's versions (especially DFII and MotS) have no effort put into compatibility testing. Jedi Academy seems to be fine on modern hardware, though, as long as you leave volumetric lighting off.

EDIT: Jedi Outcast's multiplayer is broken on my R9 280, though it works fine on Intel integrated graphics. Academy doesn't have this problem.
