I played a demo of dark forces on the VFX1 Headgear at a trade show many years ago. has anyone heard of a driver that converts the dark forces vr output to be compatible with steam vr?

There is no official Dark Forces VR version.What you are describing was a custom version made by Forte Technologies.

The game did not natively support VR and Lucasarts devs didn't implement it (you can see tin this list below).
