Have DarkXL ever been updated or any better source ports made for this game?

unfortunately the author of DarkXL died a number of years ago :( i heard nightdive wants to make a remake and a guy from obsidian is making a fan project that looks great

I know he released the source code a year or so ago and ceased working on it, but are you sure he died? Where did you hear this from?

He didn't die. Ignore that. He just hasn't worked on it.

There was an unfinished mod for Jedi Academy that had about 6 or so levels of Dark Forces 1 remade in the newer engine.

As far as I know the author of that mod died and left it unfinished. I think that is what is getting confused here. This is the mod I’m referring to btw:
