Perhaps there are already future ability upgrades that consider this. If I am recalling correctly, the boss version also has the spike ball distance vary over time?
Maybe some type of aura/glow of the spike ball to improve visibility.
This is the difference between Whirlwind and Chain Balls. Balls fly further away whereas Whirlwinds are nearer. To accomplish what you're looking for: use both.
I personally like having [balls at one set distance and whirl at a different set distance] because you can learn how to count on either independently/differently once you've got the right gear.
Heck yeah DrDerp, We are going back and forth on these topics and I'm agreeing with you on everything. All of my posts were made too early in the demo. I didn't know you could have more than one passives at the time. Once I got legendary armor that came with an extra passive, it all made sense now.
