STAR WARS™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II

STAR WARS™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II

Getting the right ending (spoilers)
I read that if you lean too close to the Dark Side, you end up killing Jan. So...how can I avoid joining the Dark Side? Does it depend on which force powers I take?

Thanks.

Bonus question: How is it that Kyle comes to learn his Force abilities? In Jedi Outcast, he reacquires them over time because he already had them once. In Jedi Academy, Jaden gets his Force powers by being taught at the Academy. In the movies, Luke and Anakin get their Force abilities by being taught (though Luke mainly had rudimentary training and then developed them the rest of the way on his own). But so far (and I've only just gotten to the first Baron's Hed level) in this game, Kyle got the lightsaber, beat a level, and suddenly had points to spend on Force powers (specifically Force Speed). I know I'm being nitpicky since it's a video game, but I just think it would make the story so much more in-line with the Star Wars universe if there were at least some kind of catalyst to help Kyle learn his Force potential.

Edit: Is there any kind of objective datapad thing to check like in Dark Forces 1 and in the games after this game?

By choosing force skills that are for light (there are neutral, light and dark types) getting neutral doesn't effect nothing also avoid killing inocent NPC's that don't attack you that also earns you points toward dark side if you do kill them.

EDIT: He choose to stop being Jedi along with using his powers and gave up on lightsaber and in return he neglected it thats my take on this at least based on games I played before Jedi Outcast.

He had to go back to Temple to restore most of his Jedi powers (Hence why Luke knew he was at temple he figured it how he could ace his training so fast because for someone like him who didn't used force so long would take much longer to retrain it).

There is also part that happened in Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith this is where he was seduced by dark force and almost killed his pupil I guess you could say that because of this he stop using Force altogether feel free to correct me if I am wrong in something.

Thank you, but I'm not asking why he stopped using his Force powers in the beginning of Jedi Outcast. I'm asking how he managed to learn to use the Force in this game. He had no prior training or knowledge of the Force. He was given a lightsaber and sent on his merry way, and yet he somehow figured out how to use the Force. How? Even Starkiller from The Force Unleashed, one of the most powerful and talented Force users in Star Wars history, had to learn under Darth Vader. Kyle Katarn is good, but he's not that good.

It could just be that this game is old and the storytelling wasn't given much attention. But I would just hate to see this game have a fatal storytelling flaw when every other game I've played in the series is so tight and fits in so seamlessly with the universe.

Also, thanks for the answer to the original question. I will keep those tips in mind. :Bleaty:

Sadly enough, you got it right. As this is one of the older SW games, the finer points of storytelling wasn't given much attention. Aside from a few appearances in some of the expanded universe books, his story is rather thin. Even in the wiki entry, he is said to be "self taught", which in someways is possible but not plausible as you point out. There are alot of holes in the Star Wars EU, this is one of many.

I hope this answers your question.

That answers it perfectly. Thank you. I suppose I'm fine with one installment in the Kyle Katarn saga having a couple holes in it since it's still a great game and the rest of the series is so damn good.

Correction. I just finished the 2nd level. (SPOILER) The cutscene that follows and leads to the 3rd mission, states that the disc that Kyle has will "lead him in the ways of the Jedi" or something like that. So... sounds like he was self taught by examining this data.

Also a possibility. It is better than nothing.
