STAR WARS™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II

Windows 10 help
I been going through my games to see what still works with my new Windows 10 upgrade. when i tried this game it seems to work just fine. showed the cutscenes, went to the menu and made adjustments and all that and even got to try the game. but after a tried it again today it says i need to set my display to 256 colors and crashes back to the desktop. anyone know a fix for this? im using a Lenovo running Windows 10 64 bit.

I guess Steam tried to make a fix. i can actually play the game now but when it comes time to actually play a small portion of the top screen is cut off making it impossible to read what items you are picking up. when i try to adjust the game screen size to a managable size the game crashes. anyone know a fix for that?

The best i've been able to achieve with JK and Mots under Win10 - 64bit is the following.

Install dgVoodoo (game had a windowed border without this)
Turn off 3D exceleration in Game and select a 4:3 resolution such as 1280x1024
Run the game as a link outside steam so you can have a fullscreen menu.

With this setup the game is playing perfectly.

Launching from Steam? The games main menu is playing in a window and the game exe occasionally stops responding. When I run it at 640x480 is seems to not do this but running as link outside steam allow me to go up to 1280x1024 without crashes.

Right-click JK.EXE, select properties, click the compatibility tab, select Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode, test game again. If that doesn't do the trick, go back to said tab & select 'disable display scaling on high DPI settings' & try it again. Using these 2 settings appears to have resolved the primary issues that I was having with JKDF2 on Windows 10 (64-bit).

Just successfully tried the following
1) Install via Steam & launch (not sure if launching is necessary)
Problems: videos not fullscreen, instable, crashing at high resolutions
2) Go to moddb.com, there go to "Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II", there to "downloads"
3) Download the JKVersions Tool and replace your JK.exe in the Steam\steamapps\common\Star Wars Jedi Knight\ Folder with the Version 1.0 JK.exe the tool gave you (you have to rename it), also copy the JK-Extension.dll file to your JK directory
4) From the same page, download and extract the Jedi Knight Enhanced 1.0 mod, which is probably optional but makes JK look alot better
5) From moddb.com, also download the Jedi Knight 2013 Unofficial Patch (JK13) and put everything into your JK directory. Execute the JK13 Updater.exe file and do the patch.
6) Launch the game again. When the intro is fullscreen, everything worked. Activate 3D acceleration and set your resolution, for me 1080p 32bit worked just fine.
7) Have fun being nostalgic :)

Addition: there's a retexture mod for JK1 too. It changes some colors but the resolutions are way higher, decide for yourself if you prefer sticking to the original or having better graphics.

Anyone knows how to record the game? NV ShadowPlay doesn't work for me, it only shows the FPS. FRAPS perhaps? I've read that it can't record the cutscenes. Any other tools?

But after struggling and struggling to get this to work in both 10 and 8.1 I can say I finally found what seems to have worked for me.

Step 1. locate the Jedi Knight and Myesteries of the Sith folders.
Step 2. Right clik to delete the Jedi.exe and the Sith.exe - DO NOT DELETE THE OTHER .exe(s)
Step 3. Right Click the JK.exe and the MOT.exe and select Run AS Administrator, and Run in Compat Mode for XP3 - do this for both
Step 4. Test the executable first from the folder - if successfull you should be fine and can launch from Steam

As I said I am not implying this will fix everyone but it has worked for me after I found it on Google - Here is the link: http://www.overclock.net/t/1343907/star-wars-dark-forces-2-jedi-knight-mots-on-windows-8

Hope this helps - let me kow if it does

Thanks! It's rare that I see someone so condescending and helpful at the same time.

I'm wondering why some struggle to run this game properly under Windows 10. I run this game under Windows 10 Professional 64bit without super special settings. All one have to do is to download the excellent dgVoodoo 2 (currently version 2.45), unzip it and copy the two files from "...\dgVoodoo2_45\MS\DDraw.dll" and "...\dgVoodoo2_45\MS\D3DImm.dll" to your game root directory. That's it. No more to do.

dgVoodoo 2 is the standard DirectX wrapper for the most old games.

After doing this little file copy thing, you can select in game the desired resolution without to patch or modify anything.

This sort of works. I can't run from Steam without causing the bugs I'm dealing with, but running directly from the folder does the trick.

Edit: I spoke too soon. Mysteries of the Sith is the only one that works. (Mind you, I had to disable administrator mode for that one, because it went into some kind of request loop - it seemed to be trying to start itself to start itself to start itself.....)

I downloaded a version of DGvoodoo and Nvidia 3d Vision worked perfectly in hardware mode but only had 320*240 scalex and 320*200scalex as options for resolution.

I went and downloaded 2.53 and it works in hardware mode at 1080p and it is SO close to working in 3D but for some reason some of the textures are dark or not drawn in one eye.

Any ideas? For some reason I'd love to play this old game in 3D vision. I'm a big fan of this game and 3d vision.
